When I hear the word “pioneer,” the first image that comes to my mind is Davy Crockett, the historic frontiersman so infamously quoted in our own town square for telling our city to go to hell. Yeah, not the most charming image. “Pioneer” is the kind of word I heard in my history class as a kid, interchangeable with “pilgrim” for my limited vocabulary. The picture in brain is generally very old-fashioned, very white, very male, and more than anything very predictable.
It wasn’t until I was curating the very journal in your hands that I found the irony of that image, considering that what identifies a person as a pioneer is his or her novelty and vision for a better future. Pioneers make way for the new, represent the minorities, and are anything but predictable. I’m lucky enough to know a lot of people right here in Jackson who embody those qualities, and it’s because of them that a new day is dawning for our community.
I’m so thankful to team up with the City of Jackson to bring you this issue of Our Jackson Home, to hear the stories of the pioneers who are paving the way to our city’s tomorrow. . . . Read more in the journal.
