Theatre Review: A Christmas Story

Spice up your holiday season with a trip to the Ned to watch their performance of A Christmas Story by Philip Grecian. You’ll be in stitches as this play has all your Christmas Story favorites: Little Orphan Annie decoder pin, double dog dares, “fudge,” “frah-jee-lay,” and more.

The action in the play is driven by the narrator, played by David Stutzman. Much of the comedy stems from the timing between the narration and the action on stage. The play is extremely well cast, especially with the young actors who propelled the action.

There are smaller parts such as those of Scut Farkas, played by Grady Allen, who brings a true skill to the evil laughs as he bullies his classmates. And there is the very young Randy, little brother of Ralph, who is played by Lydia Baxter. Despite the young age, she hilariously delivers her part with ease.

Of course, no performance of A Christmas Story is complete without Ralph Parker, played by Samuel Weatherford. He steals the show as he brings this beloved movie character to life on stage. The combination of his timing along with his reactions adds the humor that so many people have come to love from this story. We truly root for him to get his BB gun and also feel his adolescent pain of dealing with bullies and school assignments.

The two-story set takes you from the living room of the Parker family, to the school, mall, and more. It adapts every time that Ralphie’s imagination overtakes reality.

A Christmas Story  is playing at the Ned December 19-22. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday performances are at 7:30 P.M. Saturday and Sunday matinees are at 2:00 P.M. Buy your tickets today; you won’t regret it—and you won’t shoot your eye out!
