meet matt marshall

Matt is the President and CEO of United Way of West Tennessee. He is a 5th generation Jacksonian and is deeply committed to serving in a range of roles throughout the commmunity including volunteering on different boards, task-forces, and committees in Jackson. Matt is a proud graduate of Jackson Central Merry High School and Union University where he worked for a number of years. He is particularly interested in addressing poverty, equity and justice for marginalized communities. He is passionate about creating long-term change, not just short-term fixes.

“The Weight of Glory”

What’s your favorite song or type of music?

“Superstition”

There’s a lot of movies out there, but if you had to pick one…what would it be?

“The Matrix”

You’ve spent pretty much your whole life in Jackson. What is one of your favorite memories growing up?

“Going to Tornado Hill in Three-Way during the summer.”

Who would you say is the most inspirational person you’ve ever met?

“John M. Perkins - Incredible Civil Rights activist who endured incredible suffering, yet never resulted to violence or hate.”

Life is an adventure. What has been the greatest adventure you have had?

“Leading a mission trip to Ethiopia.”

What is a social cause or an issue in society that you are particularly passionate about?

“Advocating for Equity in our community. Jackson is capable of so much more, but there are still so many in our community not afforded the same opportunities as others.”

Though it might not look like it at fist glance, Jackson has some incredible stories to share. What has the community meant to you?

“As a 5th Generation Jacksonian, I'm proud to call Jackson "home." I was raised by this city, and I'm now raising a 6th generation in this city. A product and a proponent of the public schools, I can't say enough about the need for our community to rally around the common good. With recent announcements of investments coming to West TN, and recognizing what that will mean for our city. We have an opportunity to create an even better and stronger Jackson.”
