editor's note

I’ve always been a bit of an adventure hypocrite. Purchasing nature-y decor, quoting Peter Pan, ooh-ing and ahh-ing over colorful landscapes. But the truth is, that’s not me. I only hike when traveling, I never even finished reading Peter Pan, and I sure don’t have the guts to visit half the places I dream of.

When it comes down to it, I enjoy having the reputation of a discoverer more than the reality of that kind of lifestyle. Of course, I like to imagine that if only I moved somewhere dreamier—with broader views and hipper restaurants and taller trees—that I would adventure out in the ways I’ve always romanticized I would. But the more I find myself swinging between faking curiosity and blaming my circumstances, the more I come to learn that discovery is not a quality of a place; it’s the discipline of a person. . . . Read more in the magazine.
